why don’t people want to take my money?

I should take pictures. This spring is a repeat of last spring. People agree to lawn care and then I never hear from them again. Today’s landscaper has no-showed twice. Last year’s lawn guy had to be chased down every time it needed to be done – and then might show up the next week or maybe the one after. It’s frustrating. It’s annoying. And the weeds are going to grow up over the top of the house.

Sigh.

  1. That happened to me a lot, too. I don’t like to sign an annual maintenance contract because there are times when I can do some of it myself and I really do enjoy gardening – when I get the time. But it is hard to get professionals to show up on a seasonal basis or even just to cut the grass for a few weeks.

Whatever happened to all the teenage boys who used to do lawn work in the summertime? They have disappeared.

    1. I had a really nice kid a couple summers ago. He did a pretty good job and was just a nice kid. Pity he moved away. I’d be happy to sign up for someone coming every other week and not have to chase them down.

  2. I would hate that too. I’m having the same issue, except with home repair/remodeling. I have money to spend and no one calls me back!! Grrr.

    1. Is it because we’re women? Please say no. I would be extra pissed as the landscaper who has no showed me twice is a woman.

      1. I don’t think so. The people I need, who are construction/repair guys and painters get very busy this time of year as the weather starts to get nicer.

  3. I don’t think that what you’re talking about has a thing to do with gender. I think the reason that so many independent contractors are no-shows is that they haven’t a clue about how to schedule their time. They figure that everyone else is just like them, so it’s no big deal when they don’t show up.

These individuals just don’t get your anger when you confront them– and figure that you are the crazy one for even mentioning the situation. And then things go downhill from there….

    1. What makes me angry – other than that she’s cost me two days of sitting around the house all day waiting and the weeds just keep getting taller – is that she never calls back. She never says, gee I’m sorry I can’t get there today, when would you like to reschedule. Yeah, I expect she’s badly overbooked but that’s not how to run a business.

Women of my generation probably remember mechanics that treated us as stupid because we were women. That doesn’t happen to me much anymore but I guess I still fear a bias.

  4. Well the good news is I have a guy who says he will be here next Wednesday or Thursday to at least get the spring clean up done and then we can decide what to do with the rest.

He actually showed up to look at the place and talk with me at any rate.
