I sometimes write poetry for my own pleasure and satisfaction. I recently saw one of those “poetry contest” blurbs and decided “why not?” Now it seems as though I have to get my friends and family to rate my poem in order to win. Not sure that makes a real contest. Anyway, if you would like to read my poem and give it a rating please follow the link posted above.

I think that is very visual. I think of the music man for some reason
– 76 trombones led the big parade….
Gave you a vote too. I may still have a piece or two up there somewhere.

Got a letter from them yesterday. They want to include my poem as part of a 3-CD set “The Sounds of Poetry.” It would be read by a “professional” with background music. And I can purchase this set for only $49.95 plus $8.00 shipping and handling. I can also purchase the book it will be published in for the same price and order a lovely plaque showcasing my poem for only $39.00 plus shipping. Something nice to hang in the living room and remind me that I occasionally write poetry.
I was hoping to win a prize. Instead I think they want to win a prize from me. My ego doesn’t need that much stroking! Although, I’d like to have the CD set. I’m just not sure it’s worth that much.

Eve,it’s nice that they “want” to publish your poem.
As you know,I liked it too !
But the “want” and ”will be published” (and they are already selling it) makes me somewhat suspicious!
Eve,I really don’t like to rain on your excitement about the poem being published, but I heard of too many sad stories.
I would wait until they have proof that they have actually
published the poem before I ordered anything, even the
lovely plaque showcasing your poem for only $39.00 plus shipping & handling,(how much is that ?).
BTW,I wonder how much a local engraving business would charge to engrave your poem on a plaque ? You would even save the shipping & handling charges.

I’m not at all excited that they want to publish my poem. I figure it’s a scam to get vulnerable people to pay big bucks for a fancy book, CD, and plaque that they can display with their original poetry and feel good about themselves. I have no doubt that they will get enough orders from the ego-starved to pay for the books etc that are ordered. Judging from the pictures of the plaques they are offering I could print the poem out on fancy paper with a bit of embellishment and a fancy font on the computer then put it in a frame and have a plaque very similar to the one they offer. I rather like the idea of poetry recited with classical music behind it, but not enough to pay $58.00 for the CD set. They offer the books and CD’s at a discount if you order in bulk. I guess a book with my own poem might make a nice Christmas gift for selected family and friends if I were into giving that kind of gift and needed to hear how wonderful it is to have a published work. My ego doesn’t require that kind of stoking. I’m glad to know you like my poem. If I ever have anything published it will be by someone who pays me for the privilege. A lot of people pay to have books published so that they can say they are published authors. Again, I don’t need that. I enjoy writing my little verses and if some of my friends like them, too that is all the strokes my ego needs. Thanks for your kind words. Maybe I’ll share another poem with all of you someday.

I’m afraid I’ve “won” awards from them every year for — oh, maybe 10 years, for a poem I submitted way back then. When I was in college, they published one of my poems in a book and I was gullible enough to buy it. I think it had about 1000 closely printed pages. You could pay to have your picture and biography included too.
On the other hand, it has always seemed like a nice site to just explore and share your poetry on. Other people will probably like your poetry too.
